Is it the Cutco Knives or the Cutco Rep?

Wow! Something tells me that this guy can sell ice to Eskimos. In this article from the Wall Street Journal, Derek Kernus sold $32,000 worth of Cutco in one summer! This guy is a sales machine! Now, some might argue that the Cutco knives sell themselves and all this guy has to do is show up. Well it may be true that the knives sell themselves, but it is way more than just showing up, this guy had to somehow talk all those people into meeting with him before he could even show them the product. That’s the hard part. Way to go Derek!

Maybe we could get Derek to give us some insight into Cutco here? Derek, if you happen to read this we would love to have you guest write a few posts for us and give us some insight on what makes Cutco Knives so great.

A Cutco Sales Rep’s Story

Cutco Knives: How many years have you had yours?

Nancy tells about her Cutco conversion 20 years ago and her friends 50 years ago! Personally I bought my first Cutco knives set 15 years ago and got the complete set 7 years ago.
“I too finally have a decent set of knives. For years after I got married we had any old knife. What a difference when I purchased my Cutco 20 years ago. As far as their sharpening service, it is great. Pack them up, send them out and they are returned to you in a few days sharpened and polished, looking like new. The only charge you have is a bill that covers shipping. I think it is a fabulous deal and return mine about every 6 mos. Of course I am not a chef so they are not used escessively. The 12 steak knives are absolutely the best thing that ever happened. They are expensive to be sure but as the saying goes, “You get what you pay for” and I did. My friend has had her set since she got married 50 years ago and she still loves them. Of course they were only $150.00 at the time! Nancy W.” www.chowhound.com taffyl3 Jan 21, 2008 08:21AM
How long have you been a Cutco fan? We’d love to hear from you.

Why I bought Cutco Knives

The reason I bought Cutco knives is because I hate being frustrated.

I appreciate products and tools that work and work well.  I would like to say that the reason is because I am a connesuer of fine things and I appreciate the beauty of quality, but that’s not really why.

The reason I really appreciate products that work well is because they don’t frustrate me.  They don’t frustrate me by not working.  They don’t frustrate me by waisting my time.  They don’t frustrate me by causing me to think about things that I don’t want to deal with.

That’s why I own Toyota cars, Dewalt tools and Cutco knives.  One thing all three of these products have in common is they work.  They do what they are suppose to and they do it well.

Since they do what they are suppose to, I don’t end up on the side of the road because my car breaks down, I don’t end up not having enough power to drive a screw all the way into a stud, I don’t end up smashing ripe tomatoes, shaking the dinner table trying to cut a piece of meat, or ripping bread into crumbs.

These are issues that I don’t want to think about or deal with.  It frustrates me when I have to and I do not want to be frustrated!

That is why I bought Cutco Knives.

Oh yeah, by the way, one other thing all three of these products have in common, they all have high price tags!  However, they all Cost much less for me because being frustrated is not a price I am willing to pay.

#1 Tip for Saving Time in the Kitchen – Cutco Knives!

Heidi Johnson is an expert in Saving Time in the Kitchen. What’s her number one time saving tip? Sharp Knives, specifically Cutco knives.

One key to saving time in the kitchen is having the
right tools and knowing where to find them. When you have your kitchen
grouped into centers (like a baking center, cookware center and
tableware center), you can work in the area you need to work in and
have everything you need at your fingertips.

Here are the tools I can’t live without:

Good
sharp knives – My favorite knives are Cutco. They cut better than any
knife that I have used and I have never had to sharpen them. Good sharp
knives will save you lots of time in the kitchen.

Cutting Boards
- You’ll probably need more than one of these. This one is great
because it has a groove around the edge and a slip resistant bottom
that will keep your board in place.

Chopper – This is wonderful
for chopping vegetables and nuts. If your family doesn’t like big
chunks of vegetables, you’ll love this. I’ve been able to hide lots of
vegetables with this handy tool. It also chops carrots well which is
almost impossible to do with just a knife.

Bowls – It’s important you get a good set of bowls and that you store them in a convenient place in your kitchen.

Spoons
and Spatulas- Another time saving device that will save you frustration
scraping the last little bit out of your bowl are spatulas. You won’t
believe how easy it is to scrape the bowl with the curved ones.

Spices
- I buy my spices at a bulk food store because the spices are fresher
and MUCH cheaper. Make sure you have a good system for storing your
spices and that they are in your baking or cooking center in your
kitchen.

Stainless Steel pots – These are the best type of pot to
get. They heat your food evenly. I avoid aluminum pots because the
aluminum can be absorbed into your food and absorbed by your body.
Higher aluminum levels have been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Just
as carpenters need tools to complete their jobs, cooks also need to
have the right tools. Some carpenters will choose different tools than
others just as different cooks will think that some tools are more
essential than others.

Keep it simple and get only the tools you know you will use.

Cutco Knives – Buying New

Probably the biggest issue with buying new Cutco knives is that you can’t by them directly from the manufacturer or from a store. Which means that you have to contact a Cutco representative (Sales Guy) and set up a in home demonstration. What an inconvenience!

On top of the inconvenience of having to meet with the sales person, the reps are highly trained in every possible sales trick in the book to get you to buy at that very moment. It’s just not necessary. Cutco knives already have a great reputation and people appreciated quality, so why not cut it (pun intended) with the sales gauntlet.

I guess Cutco figures that if they don’t take an hour or two of your time and get their sales guy to get you all fired up and foaming at the mouth to buy, you won’t pay the apparently high price tag. But if you are reading this, then you are obviously an educated individual who understands the difference between Cost & Price and do not need a sales pitch in order to make a logical decision to invest. I mean what are they trying to do, trick you into buying? An impulse buy? I don’t think anyone wants to be tricked into buying anything. We’re certainly never happy with impulse buys.

If you are interested buying Cutco knives but don’t want to deal with the hassle of a sales pitch, we can put you in touch with some very low key Cutco reps that will make it very easy for you to buy online with out the sales rigamaroll. Just drop us an email at btedens@excite.com and we’ll put you in contact with them.

Buying Cutco Knives – New or Used?

If you have already done your research and know that Cutco knives are the way you want to go, then the next step is to decide if you want new or used Cutco knives. It seems a pretty obvious choice to me that you would want to buy new, if you have the money. I mean if you are going to invest in a quality tool, why skimp and buy a second hand hand-me-down from someone else?

Sure, it will work just like it is suppose to because it is a quality tool, but for that very reason the price of the used sets are barely less than the new sets. Is the few dollars you save really going to make a difference? For sanitary purposes alone, I know I would much rather have a new set. Isn’t it better to just have a nice clean set of new knives that no one else has ever used?

If spending the extra few dollars to buy a new set from the manaufacturer is going to make a huge difference in your budget, then it would probably be best that you buy a used set from Ebay. Just be sure to use some kind of industrial sterilization before using them, ok?

The worst thing about Cutco knives

The worst thing about Cutco knives is how dangerous they are! Cutco knives are no joke when it comes to cutting things, including your fingers! As Kelli attests to in her blog, if you’re not super careful with these knives you are sure to cut more than just the bread.

My own Cutco knives (part 3)

I still don’t think he believed me, either that or the sales presentation was so ingrained in him that he had no idea what else to do.

Once I got through to him that I was already sold and that I wanted my own set of Cutco knives immediately he started to relax. We shared a few stories about selling the knives, haggled a little over the price and then I wrote him a check for the largest set Cutco sells.

It was one of the best investments my wife and I have made. Almost every day I end up using the Cutco knives for something and it is so nice to have knives that actually cut and not tear or smash the food. I highly recommend Cutco knives to anyone every newly wed couple out there. You won’t regret it.

So, that’s my story with Cutco knives. Later on I’ll tell you some of the amazing stories about people I sold Cutco knives to.
